Driving higher standards at United Drug: PPS Health Check delivers strong results
At United Drug, we're always looking for practical ways to raise standards, strengthen performance and support our people. One of the tools that helps us do this is the PPS (PHOENIX Production System) Health Check.
The PPS Health Check is a structured, in-depth review of how each depot is performing against our core operational standards. Covering 13 modules — from KPI tracking to Goods-In — it gives a clear, scored view of how a site is operating and where improvements can make the biggest difference.
Now in its third cycle at Magna Park, the Health Check has evolved well beyond a standard audit. It plays a central role in shaping how the depot runs day to day, supporting productivity, improving teammate experience and helping us deliver the reliable service our customers depend on.
This year's assessment focused on key operational areas, including Goods-In processes, Putaway, workload assessment, shift planning and maintaining strong 5S standards. Each of these plays an important role in ensuring the depot runs safely, efficiently and consistently. The assessment highlighted significant progress in shift planning and workload management, helping ensure the right people are in the right place at the right time. These improvements have been supported by the application of Lean principles and Kaizen methodologies, driving continuous improvement across the operation.

The review, carried out in early June, was a true team effort. Depot management worked closely with continuous improvement, operations, facilities and technical teams, bringing a shared focus and clear commitment to the process. Strong preparation and collaboration meant the assessment ran smoothly, with valuable feedback shared in real time. The Health Check also recognised the positive impact of recent management changes, which have helped foster a proactive, solutions-focused culture with strong engagement and accountability across the depot.
The outcome speaks for itself. United Drug achieved an impressive 82% warehouse score and an 82% Lean assessment score, securing a green rating and becoming the first site in the PHOENIX Group to achieve a green score this year. The assessment also recognised the Dublin Distribution Centre as a "lighthouse" depot, highlighting it as an example of successful PPS and Lean implementation across the group.
This result is more than a milestone. It shows what’s possible when teams work together with clarity, consistency and a commitment to continuous improvement. It also sets a strong benchmark for future cycles, as we continue to build more efficient, resilient operations across our network. While the assessment highlighted opportunities for further development in areas such as product allocation, returns analysis and operational standardisation, it also provided clear evidence that PPS implementation and productivity growth are intrinsically linked.

We know that consistent standards and engaged teams are key to delivering better outcomes for our customers. The PPS Health Check is helping us do just that, ensuring United Drug continues to build on its successes and go from strength to strength.
