Men's Health Week 2025: The statistics tell a powerful story

Men's Health Week 2025: The statistics tell a powerful story

Every June, Men’s Health Week draws attention to the health challenges facing men across Ireland, and the statistics paint a striking picture.

🧠 Mental Health: Over three out of four suicides are by men. Despite this, many still suffer in silence.

🩺 Life Expectancy: On average, men in Ireland live four years less than women—with greater gaps in disadvantaged areas.

🍎 Lifestyle Habits:
o    8 in 10 men don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables.
o    Men consume the alcohol equivalent of 413 pints of beer per year.
o    Around 7,500 people die annually from tobacco-related illnesses.

❤️ Heart Health: Raised blood pressure and high cholesterol—often symptomless—are major contributors to heart disease and stroke.

🏃♂️ Physical Inactivity: Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week can make a significant difference—yet many men fall short.

These numbers tell a powerful story. But they also highlight a huge opportunity to take action, and pharmacists are uniquely placed to help.

As one of the most accessible healthcare professionals, your local pharmacist can offer advice, health checks, and support in key areas like:
•    Blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring
•    Smoking cessation
•    Managing alcohol intake
•    Mental health signposting
•    Sexual health and STI information
•    Nutrition and lifestyle guidance

Pharmacists are often the first port of call when someone is ready to make a change. Their role in preventative care, early intervention and support is essential, not just during Men’s Health Week, but year-round.
