United Drug Announces Charity Partnership with HUGG, Ireland’s National Suicide Bereavement Charity

United Drug today announced a new charity partnership with HUGG, Ireland’s national suicide bereavement charity. This partnership forms part of our purpose to make a real, lasting difference to our customers and communities.

Through our Charity Programme, we empower our colleagues and customers to support initiatives that are close to their hearts and have a lasting impact across Ireland.

Founded in 2017 by Fiona Tuomey after the devastating death by suicide of her 11-year-old daughter Milly, HUGG was created to ensure that no one bereaved by suicide would have to face their grief alone. With around 500 suicides* recorded in Ireland each year—and research showing that every suicide can impact up to 135 people**—more than 60,000 individuals may be affected annually and in need of postvention support.

Postvention refers to activities that reduce risk and promote healing for those impacted by suicide. By supporting people who have lost a loved one to suicide, HUGG plays a vital role in reducing the increased risk of suicidal ideation among the bereaved -estimated to be ten times higher than in the general population.*** HUGG provide free practical information and emotional support after a suicide occurs through their website, telephone support line, public events, and nationwide suicide bereavement support groups.

United Drug colleagues will be able to support HUGG through a Salary Donation Scheme, allowing team members to make regular contributions via payroll. Every euro donated will be matched by United Drug, doubling the support offered to HUGG and the people who rely on their services.

Over the coming year, we will host a range of fundraising activities to raise awareness and encourage participation across the business. We invite our colleagues, partners, and customers to get involved and help make a difference.
