Insights for a Sun Smart Summer

The United Drug Insights team saw Sunscreen sales double from 2020 to 2021.

These sales grew across all sunscreen subcategories from 2020 to 2021, with the biggest increase in adult sunscreen. Adult sunscreen lines made up 77% of sales in 2020.

The growth in sunscreen sales was similar for pharmacies in chains and those who were independents, meaning this trend benefitted across all types of customers.

Growth in adult sunscreen compared to children’s categories suggests increased holidaying from 2020 to 2021 drove this. This trend is likely to continue in 2022.   

The adult Sunscreen lines saw growth among all its major subcategories.  Stick sunscreen performed best, which saw sales almost quadrupled over 2021. Milk and lotion base sunscreen also saw strong performance growth, growing by 150% year on year. This compared to the spray sunscreen range, saw sales double, while face sunscreen grew by 27%.

Analysis shows that 79% of sunscreen sales in 2021 occurred from April to July.
